Organelles

Exploring Interconnectedness: A Ceramic Sculpture Inspired by Cell Biology

The Organelles are organic forms influenced by my background in the beauty industry. As a dermal therapist I studied the skin and its structure. Under the microscope we see organisms like cells, their systems, and shapes. These pieces try to convey that all life forms are interconnected, as every living thing is cellular.

Creating these ceramic sculptures involves meticulous handbuilt coiling and sculpting techniques. Coiling is an ancient technique, which involves rolling out clay into thin, even coils. These are then carefully stacked one on the other, layer by layer, to build the desired shape and form of the organelle. Using this method, I aim to bring a sense of organic growth and interconnectedness to the sculpture.

Sculpting techniques are then employed to refine the overall shape and detail. Delicate touches and sculpting tools are used to add texture, depth, and intricacy, mimicking the complex structures found within cells. With my hands I aim to bring life to the clay, by meticulously crafting each ridge, pore, and filament.

One distinguishing aspect of these sculptures is my deliberate choice to retain the natural color and texture of raw clay. By doing so, i aim to accentuate the organic quality of the forms, honoring the intrinsic beauty found in the simplicity of nature. The raw clay's earthy tones and inherent tactility provide a sensory experience that invites viewers to connect with each sculpture on a deeper level.
